I dream of Luzern.

19 Feb

I dream of Luzern.  Why Luzern?  Over the years I’ve had a recurring dream of wandering the old streets of Luzern, Switzerland, from the Lion Monument to the Chapel Bridge, always searching for something which I never find and then I wake up.  Once many years ago during a troubling period of my life I visited a clinical psychologist for counseling.  This psychologist used hypnotherapy as one of his clinical tools.  I was very skeptical and told him that I was not suggestible and that he would not be able to hypnotize me.  He encouraged me to try anyway and I reluctantly agreed.  He began talking while I just sat, and he told me that my right hand would begin to rise up in the air slowly and that it would keep elevating until it touched my nose, at which point it would then drop into my lap.  With every ounce of brain power I commanded my hand to lie still.  However, to my total shock it began to rise as he had suggested and it did everything that he said it would no matter how hard I tried to stop it.  That is how I knew that I had been open to hypnotic suggestion.  What does this story have to do with Luzern?  I am getting to that.  Once he had proved that I was under hypnosis, he told me that in 30 seconds I would think of a place and a time when I had felt totally peaceful and content.  In my usual nervous manner my brain frantically searched its memory banks for something that would fit that description and I could think of nothing. At the final seconds I was suddenly on a boat.  The water was lapping peacefully around it.  It was docked and we were not moving.  There was a bell aboard ringing softly and there was fog on the lake. Yes, we were on a lake and in the distance a mountain rose up.  Then I recognized where I was.  I was aboard a boat on the Vierwaldstättersee in Luzern, die Schweiz.  I was on an excursion to Mount Pilatus.  I was puzzled, because I had not thought of this event in many years.  Somehow my sense of inner knowing found this to be a place of peace and calm, a place that was more significant in my life than I had been aware.  So it was that Luzern came to be on my itinerary for this summer’s vacation.  There I will be for four days and I plan to get back on a boat on the lake to enjoy the water and the mountains and everything that is beautiful about Switzerland.
