Deutsch üben.

3 Mar

I recently bought an ipad both for my work and to carry with me to Europe this summer to stay connected to friends and family.  When I first got it, I went overboard downloading apps, something that was new to me.  I found one called Rebotomy.  Strange name.  This app will help you learn or practice several different foreign languages with photographs and native speakers.  It has multiple choice questions and opportunities to perfect your pronunciation.  Most of the time it likes my German diction with a “ding”, but it is not fond of my “ü” sound and I often get a “honk” because it is not quite perfect.  I am brushing up on my German to prepare for three weeks in German speaking Europe.  At one time back in the 1970’s I was moderately fluent.  However, many years have passed with other pursuits taking priority.  I am thinking of pulling some German books off the bookshelf and re-reading them for more in depth study.  There is a book of love poetry by Bohemian-Austrian poet Rainier Maria Rilke,  Siddhartha, an account of the life of Gautama Buddha by  German-Swiss author Hermann Hesse, and Der Richter und sein Henker (The Judge and His Executioner), a suspense thriller by Swiss author and playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt. With three and a half months before takeoff over the Atlantic, I should be able to make some serious progress. Bis später. Jetzt werde ich ein Buch öffnen und es lesen.
