The evening is the best time to visit the zoo, because the animals are not hiding away from the heat of the midday sun. Many of them are having dinner like this cute but elegant elephant. I hiked around our wonderful free zoo for an hour and a half this evening. Many people were out on a Friday to hear a free concert presented by the lake. I wanted to take photos and I did. My only regret was that I left my zoom lens at home. I fell in love with this beautiful creature. I got lucky with other animals as well. The St. Louis Zoo has had a big makeover and the presentation of the animals in natural habitats is wonderful to see.

The St. Louis Zoo has a railroad which transports visitors to all sections of the park.

Seems like you are doing a good job of preparing for your adventure.
I’m investing a lot in it so, hopefully, I will reap rewards.
Zoos are like Marmite. I love seeing different species and admire the conservation work many of them do, but cringe at the conditions some of them are kept in. This does appear to be very well kept though and interesting that it is free – who supports it then?
Thought your mother and baby photo might be kudu – similar stripes, but only the males have horns and not straight ones, so can’t be that. You do seem to be enjoying your preparation 🙂

The zoo is public, but it has many corporate donors. The animals have always been well cared for. I had not been there in a while and was shocked to see how the overall layout of the park has been Disney-fied. Concrete made to look like native rock?? It is not successful. If it were not for the live animals, I would feel like I was in Adventureland. For display in some areas they even put fake animals up in the trees. Please….We pay taxes to support the zoo, botanical garden, art museum, and science center. In the park there are many kiosks selling everything, restaurants, small snack bars, and if you park in the parking lot, it will cost you $15.
Ha! Just remembered the antelope species with the stripes and straight horns – Bongo! How can anyone forget that name 🙂

Love the animal pictures. Wow, a free zoo? That’s amazing. And the animals appear very well cared for.
Getting into the zoo is free. Any special exhibits or shows require an entrance fee. If you use the zoo parking lot, it costs $15. Many people bring their kids. Riding the train or the giant carousel costs money. The parents better be prepared to pay, or they will have some unhappy children to deal with.
