About

I made my first grand tour of Europe in 1971.  Six weeks circuit of western Europe with my Eurail Pass at a time when you could do Europe on $10 a day.  I never spent more than two nights in any one location, so I had just a cursory glance of each city where I stopped.  More than halfway through my trip I traveled by train from Venice to Vienna.  En route I found myself gaping out the window at the most beautiful landscape I had ever seen.  I would learn later that this was the area of Italy dominated by the Dolomites, stark white mountains surrounded by lush green valleys.  I made a promise to myself that if I ever came that way again I would get off the train.  Fast forward to 2013.  I am no longer the naive 23-year old.  I will be 65 when I revisit this area this summer making a week long hike through the Dolomites, the Trentino and Alto Adige regions of northern Italy.  So close to the Austrian border that German is more commonly spoken than Italian.  Funny. It has taken me 42 years to make good on that promise and I plan to relish every second of my journey.

    Best wishes on your journey.

Thank you so much, Constance, for recommending me for the Liebster Award. I gladly accept. I am so new to the blog world. I am not sure how to go about accepting this and putting the award on my blog. Is there a certain amount of time allowed to carry out all of the questions and further recommendations? Thank you for your vote of confidence and your help. Sincerely, Rosemarie

      • The Rented Home March 25, 2013 at 2:37 pm #

Your very welcome and it is much deserved. I am pretty new also and I figured it out and it really was not hard as long as I look at it like I was making a new post or page. I did make mine as a new page. Create a title, copy and paste what you need to then fill in your part. Save as you go it takes a bit of time, or at least it did for me I have three kids and one just started walking last week. Then copy the image out the image into your text. To save the award as a widget once you post your new page click on the image. This will give you your URL. Go to Settings – widget – add an image widget and put in your URL and save this will put on one of your pages permanently. Just play with it and it will work for you. Do not stress just have fun with it and no deadline. Best wishes for you.

Thank you so much, Constance. You are an inspiration. I do have a question for you as someone living in Qatar. Do you have to wear specific attire when you go out in public (hijab) or is that not necessary? I tend to think of all middle Eastern countries as having strict guidelines for women’s clothing. Once again, thank you for the nomination and thank you for taking the time to explain. Rosemarie

      • The Rented Home March 25, 2013 at 3:08 pm #

I am happy you asked. I wear western clothing and are not expected to wear any specific items, thank goodness because that would make it very difficult for me because I love fashion and I do not like to layer! We just must be respectful not to show our shoulders or knees, but I see other expats doing so with no problems, but as a respect I do not. My 14 year daughter has issues with it, but I like that I have excuses for her to dress more moderately then girls may dress in the US.

1973 – I was 24, standing above the harbour in Monte Carlo, gazing out at the spectacular view and all the cruise ships, and my husband said, one day we will return on one of those. Fast forward through a life to 2002 … My return to Europe after 29 years was WONderful and I did indeed sail in on one of those ships. Revisiting places I had been. The most poignant, for me – as a young 20-something, newly married, yet childless I stood in St-Peter’s Basilica in Rome, enthralled and moved to tears by Michelangelo’s Pieta. In 2002, now over 50, a mother, and a grandmother and a lot of life packed in between I stood, enthralled and moved to tears, again. We did 3 months back in 73, tenting and doing twice what Frommer predicted but keeping it to about $20/day. We have made several trips back since 2002 and departing for Northern Europe in 2 weeks time. Have a GLORIOUS time, Rosemarie, enjoy some poignant moments and new experiences and let us see some photos on your return. Bon Voyage!

    • Rosemarie April 7, 2013 at 1:33 pm #

Lynne, Thank you for your thoughts on your return visit and your well wishes for mine. This is something that has been on my bucket list for a long time. It is very important to me to go back and relive and revisit those places and events from my past. The hike in the Dolomites is also a challenge for myself. And yes, there will be pictures. That was the whole reason for starting the blog. Then I discovered to my surprise that I really loved blogging and connecting with like-minded people all over the world. My world expands as I sit at my kitchen counter. Thank you again for your message. It means a lot to me. Rosemarie

This is so wonderful that you are doing this. I saw the Dolomites on a trip to Italy in 2001, which was my first trip back to Europe since my month in Paris in 1967. Now, I have to go back….it is so beautiful there.

    • Angeline M April 8, 2013 at 3:18 am #

PS: Thanks for the follow on my blog. I’m looking forward to your prep and trip.

This is such a fabulous idea – best of luck with your travel plans, Rosemarie! Good that you’re training for your upcoming hike, as it looks quite strenuous in those mountains. I look forward to reading more. Bye for now!

I’m pleased to find your site and I will certainly be watching with interest your trip. I had a 3 week Cosmos tour round 9 countries in 1990. It really is a tease and makes you want more. Not sure if I will make it back so will follow along with you in cyberspace. Go girl and enjoy every moment

I am delighted to get to know you. Are you the quilter? I loved your post with the photos of the all the quilts and I even saved some of them to keep in my own collection. Such beautiful work!

      • Sartenada April 19, 2013 at 12:23 pm #

Hi. I am not quilter, but my wife quilts occasionally. We visit in many quilt shows in Finland together and I love colorful and artistic quilts very much. Next week I’ll post a quilting post.

        Happy Friday!

i look forward to your travel posts Rosemarie, and it seems we are the same age, both privileged to be able to go to wonderful places …. we have a son in Paris at the moment so we have been to Europe a few times lately … but we remember vividly travelling for 6 months from Scotland the Crete and back in a campervan with three little boys in 1979 … now our travel is shorter and smoother … this year we are off to the north of Australia to visit the Kimberley for 5 weeks … will be thinking of you walking in the Dolomites … it will be glorious!

Carol, I certainly appreciate the nomination and the compliment. I have received several other nominations. Though at first I was planning on following through, I find I have not had the time or the motivation to carry through with the requirements. But please know that I appreciate your interest in my blog, as I appreciate yours. Thank you.

Hi Rosemarie, and many thanks for the ‘like’ and for the follow on my blog ‘A Red Waterproof jacket’. I should mention that that blog was only set up to help promote my book. I don’t add any posts to it any more. I do have a general blog about allsorts at https://thewriterinthewoods.wordpress.com/
Love your intro here and so glad you’re fulfilling your promise to yourself to come back to the Dolomites. I was 65 this year too – but never expected to be living in France! have a super trip. 🙂

Hi Rosemarie! I’ve enjoyed reading your posts and look forward to seeing what’s to come! I’ve nominated you for the Super Sweet Blogging Award. You can see the post here: http://meyouandzu.wordpress.com/2013/05/17/our-super-sweet-blogging-award/

    • Rosemarie May 17, 2013 at 1:14 pm #

Thank you so much for honoring me with that nomination. I truly appreciate the compliment. I have decided, however, to be an award free blog. Your visits and comments are enough for me. Again, I thank you heartily.

I’ve done the Salzburg to Venice train trip and agree that the scenery is absolutely out of this world. I also noticed a a major difference in the quality and promptness (or lack) of the trains between the two countries.

    • Rosemarie May 25, 2013 at 1:01 am #

Well, I will be making that train trip in reverse. I assume things will become more timely as I head north.

Just wanted to say THANKS for the follow and all the positive feedback!
Looking forward to getting more into your blog when my home internet issues are resolved.

    • Rosemarie May 26, 2013 at 4:41 am #

You’re welcome. I enjoy your photo concepts.

  31. dnikias May 26, 2013 at 4:48 am #

I like your characterization of “photo concepts”. Primarily I’m a painter and printmaker, one of my several intentions with the photo work is to find abstractions that are painterly in nature so, “concept” is quite appropriate. Thanks again!

Kristin, I thank you so much for the nomination. It is true I have been nominated before, and because of my work and time commitments, I have realized I don’t have the time to do all the research required for the award. I have decided to be an award free blog. I hope you will understand, but I certainly do thank you for your vote of confidence and your interest. Sincerely, Rosemarie
